An Automotive Legend. Reborn

Maybach’s latest Zeppelin saloons are blessed with a rich heritage and opulent luxury. The Wealth Collection looks at how the car excels in elegance, innovation and performance.

To appreciate the importance of the creation of the much-lauded Maybach car, you have to travel back in time to when two momentous events first set the wheels in motion for what was to become the automotive industry.

In 1889 Wilhelm Maybach, a protégé of automobile pioneer Gottlieb Daimler, is credited with building the first four-wheel motorised vehicle designed for personal transportation. That same year he also designed two four-cylinder engines for Count Zeppelin to use in an airship.

Maybach subsequently proceeded to build the epitome of powerful engines, and in 1930 the first circumnavigation of the earth was achieved in a Zeppelin airship powered by five Maybach V12 engines. To capitalise on this success Maybach introduced the Zeppelin DS (Double Six), at the time one of the most powerful production cars in the world. It was unashamedly opulent, too – without doubt, the Maybach Zeppelin of the 1930s, with its mammoth engine, exquisite interiors and meticulous styling, was the car to be seen in.

Limitless luxury
Mercedes-Benz, owners of the Maybach brand, has introduced even more elite versions of the legendary Maybach Zeppelin – the Maybach 57 Zeppelin and the Maybach 62 Zeppelin. (For the curious, the designations 57 and 62 represent the length of the cars in decimetres.)

As you can see, every aspect of the new Maybach Zeppelin exudes character and style that touches all the senses in a remarkable and individual way. Hallmark features of the exterior include a two-tone special paint finish. The shoulderline, painted in dusky Rocky Mountains Light Brown, streaks from front to rear in scintillating contrast to the rich Taiga black finish used for the rest of the car’s body. Dark red tail light units and a fine vertical partition in the tailpipe add striking visual accents at the rear, while newly designed 20-inch wheels in a Chrome Shadow finish complete the picture.

New to Maybach are streamlined angular exterior mirrors, separated from the door frame by slender arms that give them an appealing, expressive look, and keep wind noise to a minimum.

Curving ‘ZEPPELIN’ lettering below the distinctive double ‘M’ emblem on the radiator grille and boot lid instantly proclaims the elite status of the new Maybach models.

Refined interior
One glance at the high-class leather harmonising with the high-gloss piano lacquer trim and you know that the new Maybach Zeppelin is a car for connoisseurs. Precisely crafted contrasting topstitching in the dashboard and on the doors reinforces the car’s feeling of dynamism. Unusual diamond quilting and dramatic black piping on the seat cushions are complemented by genuine lambskin carpeting underfoot.

Discreet Zeppelin branding punctuates the interior as well as the outside – ‘Maybach Zeppelin’ is engraved on the centre console in the front, on the optional partition screen, the elegant silver champagne flutes, the door sill panels and, of course, upon the exclusive key ring.

For those with a nose for imaginative detail, the Maybach Zeppelin offers an innovative, high-quality and internationally patented perfume atomiser to enhance the passengers’ sense of relaxation and well-being. Thanks to sophisticated technology, fragrances can be individually chosen to create a unique aromatic experience at the touch of a button.

Owners can insert an artistic, hand-blown glass vial of their preferred fragrance into an internally illuminated Plexiglass sphere on the rear centre console. A regulator pump will then gently diffuse a soft, delicate scent throughout the interior within 10–12 seconds. The fragrance quickly evaporates and may be reactivated as and when the occupants so wish.

Two select fragrances, developed by renowned global specialist Givaudan, are supplied with the system. One is light and refreshing, the other is a modicum heavier with woody top notes. Owners can, if they like, also have a personalised fragrance developed exclusively for them.

Also available for the Maybach Zeppelin are 18-way power rear seats, five-zone climate control, power side sunshades, cooled rear seats, wireless headphones, voice-activated power panoramic sunroof, steering-wheel-mounted navigation controls, heated glass windows and a 30-speaker premium sound system.

And with a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivering 471kW/640hp and peak torque of 1000Nm, the performance of the new Maybach Zeppelin even outclasses the rest of the powerful Maybach range. Quite simply, it is the most commanding Maybach ever.
